Náměšť nad Oslavou Declared Historical Town of the Year 2025

The town of Náměšť nad Oslavou is situated in the valley of the middle course of the Oslava River. Visitors are particularly drawn to the town by its numerous sights, which can be explored as part of the Cultural Promenade – a marked walk with commentary on the town’s landmarks. You can start the walk at the car park above the chateau and gradually explore the town’s individual monuments; an information board with key details is placed at each one.

Within Náměšť itself, several sites are immediately worth noting. Besides the Chateau and its adjacent park, these include notably the Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist, and nearby, the Baroque bridge over the Oslava River, adorned with twenty statues of saints and archangels. The square features the Holy Trinity sculpture, the Špitálek building with the Chapel of St. Anne, while the Haugwitz family is commemorated by an Empire-style tomb of deceased family members.

The walk through the town is also made more pleasant by the twelve signs of the zodiac, which became part of the public space in Náměšť nad Oslavou in 2023, created by blacksmiths from Pavel Tasovský’s workshop.

Adjoining the chateau garden is an extensive deer park with a significant population of fallow deer, founded by the Haugwitz family between Náměšť, Jinošov, and Kralice.

Třebíč

The silhouette of Třebíč is defined by the Town Tower by St. Martin’s Church, featuring the largest clock face in Central Europe. Třebíč boasts the 2nd largest square in the Czech Republic. Its most significant monuments include St. Procopius Basilica, the Jewish Quarter, and the Jewish Cemetery, all of which have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Other notable sights include the Capuchin Monastery complex with its church, a windmill, and the Orthodox Church of Saints Wenceslas and Ludmila.

Dalešice Dam

The Dalešice Waterworks is a pumped-storage reservoir located on the Jihlava River. It was constructed between 1970 and 1978 and is one of the largest in Moravia, with its waters stretching for 22 km. Its primary purpose is to serve as a source of technological water for the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant. The reservoir also offers recreational opportunities, with numerous private cottages and several campsites in its vicinity, such as ‘Hartvíkovická pláž’. Since 2012, scenic cruises have also been operating here aboard the ‘Horácko’ steamboat.

Mohelenská hadcová step

Covering an area of approximately 53 ha, the Mohelenská Serpentine Steppe National Nature Reserve rises above a meander of the Jihlava River. It stands as one of the most valuable natural sites not only in the Czech Republic but across Europe. This unique territory, formed on a serpentine bedrock, has, thanks to its specific conditions, given rise to distinctive types of steppe vegetation, including dwarf-sized plants and animals, scientifically known as nanisms.

Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou

The town’s dominant landmark is the Baroque chateau with the adjacent Church of St. Margaret. The chateau also features a French-English style park with rich sculptural decoration. The chateau boasts a rich musical and cultural history, with musical festivals still frequently held in the park today, and the annual International Petr Dvorský Music Festival continues this tradition.

Telč Town

The town’s first written records date back to the early 14th century. Its historic core is considered a most valuable heritage reserve, leading to its inscription on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in 1992. Its dominant features include a Renaissance chateau, a Jewish cemetery and synagogue, and it annually hosts the music festival Prázdniny v Telči.

Oslava and Chvojnice Valley

The Oslava and Chvojnice Valley is a captivating hilly landscape with numerous marked hiking trails leading past the ruins of ancient castles.

It is a deep valley of the meandering Oslava River, flanked by steep slopes and cliffs, adorned with oak and pine forests and remnants of floodplain meadows. The starting point for exploring the Oslava River valley is Náměšť nad Oslavou; the trail passes Vlasák’s Gamekeeper’s Lodge, beyond which begins the most romantic part of the hike – the rapids section of the Wild Oslava with numerous boulders. It is home to eight hundred species of vascular plants.
The valley features the remains of medieval castles such as Lamberk, Nový (Sedlecký) Castle, Kraví Hora, and Lechov, as well as several mills, a small chateau on Wolf Hill, and the Gloriet gazebo.
